Members’ Corner - Becky
We know the challenges of trying to fit a structured exercise regime into daily life. The additional difficulty is then when your work and lifestyle changes! Luckily CrossFit is adaptable to whatever you are going through, and the community at Blitz will always be here no matter how often you make it through the door.
Becky first joined us in August 2018, worked as a teacher and fitted CrossFit classes at Blitz around her working schedule. Fast-forward to the present day, and Becky has a 2 and a half year old daughter, and has also embarked on a career change. Read on to find out how her training has changed along with her daily routines.
How did you first find out about Blitz?
My sister told me about the wonderful world of CrossFit. She thought I would like it so I decided to give it a go…that was 5 and a half years ago. Blitz was my nearest box and has been my CrossFit home ever since!
Over the years, having a child and changing jobs, how has this style of training worked for you?
I love how adaptable the training is. I was able to train all the way through pregnancy right up to 40 weeks and the coaches at Blitz were great at helping me scale and adapt the workouts to accommodate my bump as it grew. I loved the feeling of staying fit and strong through pregnancy.
The postpartum period wasn’t as easy for me and has definitely been more of a mental game to regain confidence in the gym. Again, the coaches have been amazing – little messages when I haven’t been in for a while and encouraging me in class to find the right progressive scale. Trish even offered to babysit so I could make classes!
I’ve got to give a little shout out to Graeme too, who acts like my own personal cheerleader and has given me the confidence to start hanging on the bar again (little steps!) and to stop substituting runs in the workouts – thank you!
What advice would you give to someone else struggling to get exercise in with a young family?
First of all you’re doing a great job – raising little people is not easy and your little person is lucky to have you! In terms of advice, it would be to celebrate showing up and moving your body. Some weeks you’ll make it in five times, some days you’ll be late because they’ve projectile vomited on you or poured Weetabix over their head just as you’re about to leave, and some days/weeks you won’t make it in at all and that’s OK.
Don’t put pressure on yourself to be hitting the same numbers/times you did before. Simply enjoy an hour of adult conversation, a burst of endorphins and showing back up to family life a little fitter and stronger!
Finally, what has been your most memorable moment at Blitz so far?
Finally hitting a 100kg back squat. I was close to reaching this milestone before pregnancy and had actually come to terms with the fact I may never get there postpartum, but I did!
