January Member of the month // Stephen Johnson

How did you first get involved with Blitz?

I was walking past Blitz on the way to the train station and, having seen some guys who looked like Thor running outside during a WOD, decided to pop in for an intro session back in May 2022. I still don’t look like Thor, but I haven’t looked back since!

What is your most memorable CrossFit moment so far?

I came into Blitz with a wrist injury that limited my ability to do movements like front squats. After about a year and a half of working on mobility and building up strength, I was thrilled the first time I no longer had to adapt any of the movements to protect my wrist. 

And (more self-congratulatory) I got my first Bar Muscle Up about two months ago which took me by surprise. 

What is your favourite movement/workout?

I’m pretty happy when I see a WOD with running or cycling

What is your least favourite movement/workout?

Snatches or Overhead Squats!

Name a CrossFit goal you hope to achieve by the end of this year?

Given that it’s late December I’m going to go for a 2025 goal, which is to finally nail sets of Double Unders. I’d also like to take part in The Open for the first time in 2025.

What do you do when you’re not training at Blitz?

Chasing our four-year-old and one-year-old boys around the various playgrounds of Twickenham!

What is your favourite part of being a Blitz member?

The community and lack of pretense. I really like how members spur each other on and congratulate each other’s accomplishments.  

If you could give a new member one piece of advice what would it be?

Run your own race. Initially, there was definitely the temptation to look to the left and the right to see what others were doing, but I soon realised that comparison is the thief of joy!

Tell us a fun fact about yourself….

I’m from Rhode Island and grew up working on the docks and boats. I spent summers during university working on mega-yachts and have raced on Easterner, a wood hulled America’s Cup 12 Metre.
