Members’ Corner - Sean
At Blitz, we believe CrossFit is for everyone. No matter what your previous exercise background is or what your goals are, we know we can help get you stronger, fitter and happier.
Sean is a fully qualified Personal Trainer and an ex-professional runner, and has been training with us for almost two years. He has since competed in Hyrox a number of times and has made it to the World Championships in the Pro Division. But what brought him to Blitz in the first place? Read on to find out more about Sean’s CrossFit journey…
How did you first find out about Blitz?
I’ve always watched CrossFit on Netflix and YouTube, however when I was a professional runner, I thought I was going to do that for the rest of my life and never have another love in the realms of sport.
Then I got injured and had to take some time out. I was told that I had a high chance of rupturing the tendon in my ankle if I didn’t take a break and then return to running gradually. So, I thought '“what I could do in the meantime that will help me stay fit and strong?”
I knew of Blitz as it is around the corner from my house and I walked past it almost every day to go to work. I decided to go round and enquire, with a view of just doing it for a few months while I recovered from my injury.
I had my first CF101 class and because I was coming from a running background I thought I could easily transition into CrossFit. However, learning new skills, lifting weights, and doing exercises in a different fashion was extremely humbling, challenging, and fulfilling…but also addictive!
What do you value most at Blitz?
No day is ever the same and no day is ever boring. Blitz brings a great variety of different exercises, skills, and training stimulus to their classes.
I value the community, friendships built, and the high-level knowledge delivered by the coaches. As a coach myself, you know when people know what they're talking about or don't know what they're talking about. At Blitz all the coaches are so knowledgeable and love what they do, you can see it shine through in their class delivery.
As a trainer, what advice would you give someone who is struggling with exercise?
Don't beat yourself up - you're going to have great days at the gym and also, not so great days. CrossFit is a sport that challenges all facets of fitness so there may be things you're amazing at and some things that could be your weakness. There's been plenty of days where I'm not feeling it after a long day at work, but I always know that a bad session will always be better than a missed session... Always!
What are your top tips for getting the most out of training?
My top tips for getting the most from your training, body, and mind... don't take life too seriously! Be in the moment when you are training, it's your time to top up your tank and leave your stress behind.
Make sure you build weights up gradually to prevent injury. Leave your ego at the door - don't get sucked in to what anyone else is doing as we're all on different paths.
Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy! The more you enjoy what you're doing the more likely you'll do it again.
